Horizons Greater Washington offers a six-week summer enrichment program and school year Saturday program designed to help a diverse population of children from low-income families to:
- develop a lifelong interest in learning through a challenging and fun curriculum;
- advance academic gains over the summer and improve achievement in school;
- participate in cultural experiences outside their immediate inner-city neighborhood.
Horizons Greater Washington is the first multi-Site regional affiliate of Horizons National operating concurrent programs at each of the participating independent schools.
Horizons Greater Washington expanded out of Horizons at Maret, which began in 2000 as an affiliate of Horizons National with 16 children, as a partnership between H. D. Cooke Elementary School in Washington, DC, and Maret School. In January 2008, Horizons welcomed a second partner school, Bancroft Elementary School, also in Washington, DC.
In May 2009, Horizons expanded to a second independent host school, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, and thus begun planning for the expansion to Horizons Greater Washington.
November 2009 marked the incorporation of Horizons Greater Washington and in February 2010, Norwood School agreed to serve as the third independent host school partnering with Rock Creek Forest Elementary School in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Horizons Greater Washington is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which depends on the generosity of foundations, individual donors, special event income, and in-kind donations to sustain the programs.
